UV Printing vs. Laser Engraving: Which Is Right for Your Order?

UV printing and laser engraving are both excellent — for completely different reasons. Here is how to choose the right method for your logo, gift, or promotional product.

When you order a custom product, the decoration method changes everything about how it looks, how long it lasts, and what kinds of artwork it can reproduce. UV printing and laser engraving are the two most common methods for custom drinkware and promotional products — and choosing between them is not about which is "better." It is about what each method does well.

What Is Full-Color UV Printing?

UV printing applies ink directly to the surface of the product using ultraviolet light to cure it on contact. The result is a vibrant, full-color image that can reproduce photographs, gradients, detailed logos, and brand colors with accuracy that other methods cannot match.

  • Best for full-color logos, photos, gradients, and detailed artwork
  • Reproduces exact brand colors (Pantone matching is achievable)
  • Works on curved surfaces — tumblers, can holders, poker chips
  • Print area can cover the entire surface of the product
  • Smooth, vibrant finish with excellent detail reproduction

What Is Laser Engraving?

Laser engraving uses a focused beam to permanently remove material from the surface of the product — typically the anodized coating on aluminum or the top layer of a stainless steel tumbler. The result is a permanent mark that cannot fade, peel, or wash off, ever.

  • Best for text, monograms, logos with clean lines, and fine detail
  • Permanently etched — no coating, no sticker, nothing to wear off
  • Clean, premium, understated appearance
  • No color in the mark itself — contrast comes from the exposed material
  • Ideal for gifts, awards, and items that get daily use and heavy washing

When to Choose UV Printing

Choose UV printing when color is central to your design. If your logo uses multiple colors, if you want a gradient or photographic element, or if you need brand colors to be accurate and vibrant, UV printing is the right call. It is also the method to use for poker chips and acrylic keychains, where the goal is visual impact.

UV printing is the default for poker chips, acrylic keychains, and most custom tumblers with color logos or artwork.

When to Choose Laser Engraving

Choose laser engraving when permanence and feel matter more than color. Corporate gifts, personalized drinkware for daily use, luggage tags, and awards all benefit from engraving. A laser-engraved tumbler with a name or monogram has a quality feel that printed products do not — and it will still look perfect after years of regular use.

Laser engraving is the right choice for gifts, awards, monograms, and any product that will see years of daily use.

Can You Do Both on the Same Product?

On some products, yes. A stainless steel tumbler can be UV printed on one side with a full-color logo and laser engraved on the opposite side with a name or message. This combination is popular for employee gifts and branded merchandise where you want both impact and personalization. Check the product page or contact us for availability on a specific item.

File Preparation Tips for Each Method

For UV printing, provide your artwork as a high-resolution PNG (at least 300 DPI at print size) or as a vector file (SVG, PDF, AI, or EPS). Vector files are preferred because they scale to any size without losing quality.

For laser engraving, vector files (SVG, PDF, AI) are strongly preferred. The laser follows vector paths, so crisp line art engraves cleanest. If you are uploading a raster image (PNG or JPG), use the highest resolution available and ensure the artwork has good contrast.
